Yanardag – Fire Mountain – is 116 meter hill located on the top of natural gas pocket causing continuous flame eruption. Gobustan is best known for being the home to the famous rock petroglyphs. The area has been settled since the 8th millennium BC. On this territory there are many traces of primitive inhabitance of people belong to the period of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic. It is known for hosting thousands of rock engravings spread over 100 square km depicting hunting scenes, harvest, ritual dance yalli, people, ships, constellations and animals. In 2007, UNESCO included the ‘Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape’ in the World Heritage list. There are over 300 mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan. 100 of them are located near the Gobustan reserve alone. There are giant volcanoes, such as Toragay and Great Kanizdag in Gobustan, with a total elevation of 400 metres. The Goturdag volcano in Gobustan is the world’s only continuously erupting volcano; mud squeezing as the specialists put it, has been observed there for many years
